Back story
As a freelance writer and photographer, commissions flowed in to write and illustrate online and offline content for clients. Then the pandemic hit in 2020. Almost overnight, most of my freelance work disappeared as office after office closed down. Doing nothing was not an option, so I decided to create my own magazine. The magazine is called ‘Scotland in 4 Seasons’. The quarterly publication was designed to explore our connections with Scotland throughout the year.
A positive in the pandemic
The content was positive, uplifting and full of beautiful photography. Teaching myself how to use InDesign was a rewarding challenge I successfully mastered. But there was more to grasp. Generating content and advertising was followed by the final draft and then it was the nerve-wracking proof reading of the magazine. Finally, it was the publishing and printing of the magazine. Each quarterly, after delivery, meant processing, packing, and posting magazines out to a growing customer base. It challenged me but I loved it! In my upper 50s it was incredibly rewarding learning new skills.

A business publication is something people can look forward to, and as it grows it develops into a loyal relationship and builds a following. Of course, that’s if you get it right!
